Since 7 October 2023, the Gaza Strip has faced an unprecedented health and humanitarian crisis amid ongoing aggression that has continued for more than two years, despite declared truces that have amounted to no more than formal measures. This reality has led to a widespread collapse of the health system, with 22 out of 38 hospitals completely out of service, while the remaining hospitals are operating with limited capacity, and many vital departments have ceased functioning due to the acute shortage of medicines and medical supplies, in addition to the direct and repeated targeting of health workers.
Humanitarian indicators clearly reveal the scale of the catastrophe: the number of martyrs has exceeded 70 thousand, while the number of wounded has risen to more than 171 thousand, including thousands of cases requiring long-term medical care and regular dressing changes. Yet hospitals and health centres, amid scarce resources and disrupted supply chains, are no longer able to provide even the minimum level of this care, placing the lives of thousands of wounded people at risk of deterioration and complications that could be prevented through well-planned and timely intervention.
In this context, the urgent need emerges for effective humanitarian intervention that goes beyond temporary solutions. The International Medical Relief Association “Medics” is providing a practical response aimed at bridging a critical gap in healthcare by delivering the necessary medical services and dressing changes to the wounded in shelters through mobile clinics to follow up on the condition of the wounded and the sick, especially those whose injuries or displacement conditions prevent them from reaching hospitals and medical centres. Supporting this intervention is not merely an emergency response, but a direct investment in protecting lives, strengthening the resilience of the health system, and ensuring that life-saving care reaches the most vulnerable groups at the time when it is needed most.
This project is based on providing medical care to the wounded where they are located in Gaza, the Central Area, and Khan Younis, through the appointment of 9 mobile medical teams affiliated with the International Medical Relief Association Medics (Medics Team)
These teams will be deployed and distributed across displacement locations in the Gaza Strip, the Central Area, and Khan Younis, and will provide medical services to 96 wounded people in need of physiotherapy services, and 170 wounded people in need of dressing changes, after examining them and determining the nature of the necessary intervention. This intervention comes in response to the existing shortfall caused by the lack of the necessary capacities in hospitals and primary healthcare centres to provide medical dressing change services.
The project aims to provide direct daily medical care to the wounded and sick (through 9 mobile teams), by carrying out the necessary medical interventions after visiting them, and providing continuous health follow-up within places of displacement and residence, in a way that ensures reducing health complications, accelerating recovery, and improving the quality of life of the wounded.
This project represents a practical model of mobile community healthcare, as it brings life-saving medical service to the patient where they are, helps bridge a critical gap in the health system, reduces pressure on hospitals, and ensures that care reaches people in a timely manner.
