Hospitals and health facilities in the Gaza Strip are facing mounting challenges as a result of the ongoing power outage, given their heavy reliance on generators to provide the energy needed to operate departments and essential medical services. Electricity is not a secondary operational element inside a hospital; rather, it is directly linked to the functioning of operating rooms, intensive care, emergency services, and laboratories, as well as the operation of medical devices and equipment and the storage of medicines and supplies that require suitable conditions. As the power outage continues and alternative energy sources remain unstable, the risks of medical service disruption increase and the ability of health facilities to respond to growing needs declines.
In this context, the Public Service Association continues to provide its health and humanitarian services in the Gaza Strip through the Public Service Hospital, the Eye Specialised Hospital, the Heart and Vascular Hospital, and the Gastroenterology and Liver Center, benefiting more than 15,000 patients each month, at a time when health needs are increasing and pressure on medical facilities and their staff is intensifying.
In light of the electricity crisis, the Public Service Hospital relies on generators to secure its energy needs and maintain the readiness of its departments and medical services. However, the initial technical review revealed a number of generators that are out of service, in addition to other generators that require urgent maintenance interventions. This threatens the hospital’s ability to provide a stable and safe power source and increases the likelihood of service and medical equipment disruptions if the situation continues without intervention.
If these generators are not repaired and returned to service, this may lead to the shutdown of essential parts of the hospital’s operations, especially the vital departments that depend on a stable power source. This could put patients’ lives at risk and directly affect the continuity of their treatment and medical care, as well as limit the ability of medical teams to handle emergency cases in a timely manner. Hence, there is a clear need to carry out the necessary maintenance and rehabilitation work for the generators located in the Heart and Vascular Building and the main building of the Public Service Hospital, restoring their readiness and operational efficiency and strengthening the hospital’s ability to continue providing its health services under all conditions.
The project aims to address technical faults and improve generator efficiency by carrying out the necessary mechanical and electrical maintenance work, addressing faults related to coils and oils, rehabilitating operating systems, inspecting electrical loads, replacing damaged parts, and conducting the necessary technical and operational tests to ensure the generators are safe and efficient before returning them to service.
Through this intervention, patients will benefit directly, especially those attending operations, intensive care, and emergency departments, as well as patients in outpatient clinics and laboratories, and medical, nursing, administrative, and service staff, in addition to visitors and patients’ families. Repairing the generators also helps reduce the risk of service interruption or damage to sensitive medical equipment due to unstable power, provides a safer operating environment, and strengthens the hospital’s readiness to respond to emergencies and continue providing medical care to those who need it.
