An Orphaned Girl Born in War

Mariam Bassal .. A Girl Born in War and a Grandmother Holding on to Hope for Her Treatment

Since the tumor appeared on Mariam’s face when she was two months old, her grandmother began a journey to find treatment for her. She took her from one doctor to another, accompanied her in hospitals, and stayed by her side while she received medication, hoping to find something that would ease her suffering and give her a chance to grow up in better health.

Mariam Ahmed Taisir Bassal was born on May 12, 2024, amid the war in Gaza. An orphaned girl, she had barely begun her life when she needed medical care. By her side stands her grandmother, trying to give her tenderness and safety, and to secure treatment she has long awaited.

Between caring for her granddaughter and searching for her medication, the grandmother carries a heavy responsibility. She wants to see Mariam grow and play, and to be reassured that the treatment she needs will be available.

A Grandmother Accompanies Her Granddaughter from One Hospital to Another

The grandmother has not stopped trying since the tumor appeared. She consulted doctors, stayed with Mariam in hospitals, and followed the treatments she received through an IV. With every visit, she waited for a step that would bring her granddaughter closer to recovery.

When the doctor prescribed injections Mariam needed, the search for them began. The grandmother searched across Gaza, but the conditions of war made finding them impossible. She knew what the doctor had prescribed and tried to obtain it, without being able to secure it for her child.

The grandmother speaks of about a year and a half spent waiting for the injections and trying to get them. A long time in the life of little Mariam, and in the worry of her grandmother, who continues to care for her and hold on to hope despite the difficulty of the road.

An Operation Mariam Is Waiting For

The doctor recommended urgent surgery for Mariam and explained to her grandmother that she needs several operations, and that the first operation is an important step toward completing the rest of the medical interventions.

The grandmother’s main concern has become ensuring that her granddaughter can have this operation, and finding someone to help her secure what is needed and continue treatment afterward. Everything she has worked for now needs support that will allow Mariam to access the care she requires.

She sums up her request in simple words: that we help Mariam, and stand with her. It is the appeal of a grandmother who has accompanied her granddaughter throughout the journey of illness, and who wants to see her efforts result in treatment that eases her suffering and in reassurance that comes back to her from the hospital.

Behind the Tumor, a Girl Discovering Life

Mariam holds a small phone and interacts with one of the Medics team members. A moment from her childhood reminds us of the care, joy, and opportunities she deserves to discover the world around her.

Mariam has the right to receive treatment, to find someone who cares for her, and to have her days filled with play and rest. What she needs today is the care that will help her continue her life in the best possible condition.

As for her grandmother, she needs someone to share this burden with her. She needs help that eases the strain of searching for medicine and the cost of treatment, and helps her follow appointments and procedures, so she can continue standing by her granddaughter’s side.

Let Us Support Mariam in the Next Step

Helping Mariam begins with clear needs: securing the requirements for the operation, supporting the costs of treatment and tests, and continuing follow-up with the medical team. These are practical steps that can give this family a chance to move forward after a long wait.

Mariam is one of many children in Gaza who need operations, medicines, and ongoing care. Behind every child is a family searching and striving, waiting for support that helps them complete the treatment journey.

With your donation to Medics, you contribute to supporting efforts to help Mariam and other sick and injured children, and to helping provide medical care according to each case’s needs. Your contribution may be part of the cost of an operation, medicine a child needs, or a test that helps complete treatment.

Mariam was born in war and faced illness from her first months. By her side is a grandmother who has never stopped striving for her.
